Family board game design: Gnome Elf Troll

Gnome Elf Troll is a whimsical family board game for 3–4 players, built around a strategic twist on rock-paper-scissors. I led the visual development from concept to shelf, including art direction, branding, packaging, product design, layout, and marketing assets. From character design to production constraints, every detail was tuned for shelf appeal, playability, and cost-efficiency, exemplified by a 2mm reduction in meeple thickness that shaved off over €1500 in manufacturing costs.
Cover artist: Emil Landgreen.

The elf meeple underwent several iterations to enhance stability and avoid weak points . At just about 16mm tall and 7mm deep, conveying delicate features like a bow and hair strands required compromises in detail level. The final design preserved recognizability while ensuring durability in play.

The elf character was originally conceived as an elderly male. To broaden representation and strengthen the game’s appeal, I directed a redesign into a female archer. This shift balanced fidelity to the fantasy genre with inclusivity, while retaining recognizability in the meeple silhouette and artwork. It reflects how art direction and marketing considerations guided character development.

Final packaging setup with die‑cut lines ensuring print accuracy and production feasibility.
